Purpose:
The primary responsibility of this position is to effectively and efficiently manage the operations of the Centres of Excellence (COE), currently offering in excess of 50 programs per year, and develop the sales, marketing and revenue strategy within the Schulich Executive Education Centre (SEEC). The main focus is on the strategy and operations of the COE to achieve targeted growth in revenue and contribution margin. This involves providing open enrollment programs, customized and JIT programs to corporate clients, raising sponsorships for the COE, briefing and managing research projects of the COE and managing the commission based sales force selling the COE as well as managing the COE Program Directors. There are currently12 COE, with an expectation to add 1 - 2 more per year over the next five years. The COE are comprised of the following activities: Open Enrollment short term area specific training programs; Masters Certificate programs which are offered as open enrollment programs - a minimum of 90 hours of in class education spread over several months; custom sales of area specific programs to organizations in the Toronto area; custom and open enrollment sales to our University Partners in each province of Canada and in the United States. The SEEC COE current budgeted revenue is $6 million a year.
Responsibilities:
Develop and manage the COE and sales force strategy and operations. The custom sales team is expected to generate approximately $2M/year. Win profitable business for the COE and Sales Team Work with each of the COE Program Directors (PDs) to: Design, strategy and operations of the COE programs Institute practical research projects and publish findings in each of the specific areas Identify experts in the field to become part of an advisory board for each COE Launch one conference per COE per year. Supervision of the administrative YUSA, YUTA and YUSA2 staff; contractual program directors (one per COE); management of the sales team. This function includes hiring, training, motivation, monitoring, discipline and firing of personnel. Negotiate contracts with Program Directors, facilitators, Sales Representatives and custom in-house clients. Supervise the contract marketing communications function, overseeing the direct marketing via brochure mailings, e-mailings, website maintenance and improvement and consideration of additional marketing communications media. Responsible for seeking out and obtaining RFQs from suppliers for large projects in conjunction with the Director, Finance and Strategic Planning and within the policy and procedures of the Purchasing Department at York University. Develop the Strategic and Business Plans for COE to recommend what specific programs to offer, when, where, how frequently, at what price, and using which instructors. Key in planning and execution will be maintenance of existing programs, and the development of more program offerings under each COE. Actively seek out and recruit our University Partner network to run COE programs as a way of increasing global recognition as well as increase revenue. Actively seek custom/in-house opportunities for the COE within the existing SEEC client data base and seek out new clients.
Manage and grow the existing COE both open enrollment and custom offerings from $6M/year in revenue to $10M/year in revenue over the next five years.
Recruit industry experts as Program Directors and work with them in curriculum deisgn; negotiating and hiring of facilitators; and quality ensure control of the programs.
Launch a minimum of five new COE within the next five years which would entail, conducting research on the subject matter; holding round tables with executives; speaking to industry experts on the feasibility of launching the COE and hiring PDs for the Centres.
Obtain corporate sponsorship revenue for each seminar within the COE which would entail writing proposals to corporations; meeting with Presidents and CEOs to obtain funding; and building good client relationships to ensure sponsorship continue each year. Responsible for conducting Research projects for the COE with published results on the findings. Recruit, monitor and set financial goals for the 8 member sales team, to increase COE custom program sales.
Education:
University degree preferably MBA or Masters in Adult Education.
Experience:
5 - 7 years experience working in an educational organization; managerial responsibility of a peer-based organization, experience managing within a unionized environment, experience in managing a sales force, setting goals and expectations; strategic capabilities to develop strategies, plans and revenue/profit producing initiatives.
Skills:
Knowledge of current best practices and trends in executive education and current offerings by competitors; leadership and managerial skills, including the ability to motivate staff and ensure that work performance meets expectations. Managerial capability; excellent verbal and written communications, marketing and negotiation skills; excellent time management skills and project management skills in order to manage 50+ programs per year; financial/budgetary skills in order to develop all COE budgets forecasting revenue and expenses; superb customer service skills; strategic and creative problem solving skills; strong entrepreneurial drive and energy; excellent computer skills specifically Word, Excel and Power Point.
